Saudi Arabia

Cars-

They do have Uber & it’s so much cheaper than “black cabs” they just make up the price because there’s no meter. They guess. But they also have this app called “careem” that works as a taxi service, food delivery etc.

They use their horns a lot

No one signals

There isn’t really turns, just roundabouts or U-turns

They don’t always stick to the lanes, they waver around

Most of them drive recklessly and when they crash they don’t stop & exchange details- it happens so much

All their cars are bashed up and scraped

Mostly men who drive but I’ve seen some women

There is a lot of cars, most people drive. Everything is so spread out you kind of have to drive to get anywhere

My Uber driver to Jeddah old town crashed on the motorway thing because a man came into the right side of him and the man just kept driving but we pulled over for a minute.

Culture-

Very desolate and building estate like and there can be an empty shell of a building and right next to it there’s the Hilton or something wonderful (very contradicting)

Most people are so lovely and speak English or at least try to

Hardly any of the younger men wear the traditional white and red outfit, but a lot of older men do.

Nearly all the women and teenage girls wear either an abuaya or full length black dress (hijab)

Everyone has smart phones

There’s a lot of construction going on and they’re saying they want to build and modernise it and make it like Dubai

EVERYTHING is so expensive!

Everyone has jobs & because of this people are always doing stuff and sometimes places are over staffed. The staff to customer ratio in a lot of eating places I’ve gone to is very high

It’s very clean, like the toilets, streets and malls etc. In the loos there is a male in the males loo and a female in the female loo cleaning and looking after the toilets constantly (kind of off putting when you need to fart or do a poo) they will either sit by the sinks and wait for you to finish or they’ll stand by the paper towels and hand you some when you need.

No homeless people anywhere

No one drinks the tap water, so the water bottle business and selling is big (cause the water is desalinated water from the sea)

Their timings are different, they don’t wake up until midday and they stay awake past midnight, a lot of life goes on when it’s dark because of the heat.

Dinner is later and therefore restaurants and food stay open later than they do in the UK

Even though it’s illegal a lot of people do drugs, especially smoke weed, but it’s obviously on the DL and they’re very careful. People grow weed.

There are shishas everywhere and most people own one at home too

You can smoke inside a lot of restaurants and around / in the pool in the complexes

They have huge buildings that randomly have man made holes through the middle and they were designed like that.

There is so much fast food, I’ve seen so many maccies, Starbucks and KFC. The food is quite westernised

You hardly see women of their own

No tourists

Everyone is Muslim and prayer time is so important, they stick to it

There’s so many mosques and also just carpets on the street or in malls and there’s also designated rooms for prayer like in the airport and at theme parks etc.

They only do plastic straws and they all come with paper packaging

Alcohol is illegal so some people make it themselves and make moonshine and it’s so strong

They sell non-alcoholic drinks everywhere and call them mocktails or they sell Budweiser in supermarkets or restaurants etc

Clothing-

A lot of the women have nice shoes, jewellery, henna or nails and also bags.

There is more plastic surgery like Botox and lip filler for the women than I expected

The male bodybuilders (like anywhere else in the world) take steroids & compete in competitions, they have them in Saudi too

The women are all stunning and very beautiful

As well as being middle-east-looking people, there’s also a lot of black people who are Saudi Arabian

There’s A/C everywhere and sometimes it’s too cold!

They eat traditional food with their hands

The women wash and dry their feet in public toilet sinks
